Casa Honey, Margaret River

Have you heard of a “bach”? Iconic to New Zealand’s history, culture and landscape, this small and modest holiday home is often found near the beach, lake or bush, and is usually made of recycled or cheap materials like corrugated iron and used timber. The bach, along with Australia’s beach and bush shacks, was the inspiration for Jane’s own Margaret River home – a two-bedroom dwelling with a footprint of just under 80m2.

Jane designed her abode with the intention to live as simply and affordably as possible. Driven by a desire to “build small but smart”, she worked with local design and construction team Tectonics Building Design to bring her dream to life.

The result is a series of rigorously-considered spaces that all have a purpose. Light-filled, each room connects effortlessly with one another, and with the home’s natural surrounds. There is no dead space. Nowhere to accumulate unneeded “stuff”. Instead, the things that fill Jane’s home are chosen thoughtfully, used regularly/seasonally, displayed artfully or else repurposed/regifted.

A great example of living simply, sustainably and meaningfully, Jane’s bush bach is a small home with an enormous soul, and proof that bigger isn’t always better.
